A Weekend with The Thompsons
June 9, 2014
We were lucky to spend this past weekend around three of the greatest lacrosse players we have ever met - Lyle, Miles, and Ty Thompson. Their shooting was fast and accurate. Their stick skills were mesmerizing. Their dodging was crisp and efficient. Their behind the backs, shovel shots, stick fakes and over-the-shoulder passes were perfect, but a few things stood out above all else that we wanted to share. On the final day, Lyle finished the camp with a talk about growing up on the Onondaga reservation and why they play Lacrosse. He talked about a lot of things, but one thing stood out above everything else:
“When someone watches me play the one thing I want them to take away is that I love to play
and I am playing with all of my heart. You’re not supposed to get mad playing this game.
You should be happy.”
We thought back on all the great players we watched as kids, played with as players, and now help as coaches. What do they all have in common? They play happy. The best players play because they love it and find joy simply in playing. You cannot reach your full potential unless you are truly having fun and the Thompsons are the greatest example of that we have ever seen. Never play with anger or fear in your heart. Never disrespect an opponent, teammate, official or coach because that is disrespect to the game itself. Play with passion and courage and take pride in doing the small things well. Never let a win go to your head, and never let a loss bring you down for too long. Go out and play because you love the game and treat every practice, game or catch like the special opportunity that it is.
Lacrosse is about family. When Lyle and Miles play catch, it is more than just a game, it is a conversation. They speak to each other through their sticks, opening themselves up to share in something greater than themselves as individuals. When they play alone they are great, but when they play together they are truly unstoppable because they are playing for each other. They are always building each other up, helping each other to see the strength within themselves and to be the best that they can be. They never fight, or argue or tear the other one down. Instead, they tell stories about how great the other one is, and set him up to take advantage of his strengths on and off the field.
The Iroquois Nation believes Lacrosse - The Medicine Game - was invented by our creator to help heal ourselves and that simply playing the game is a tribute to our existence. By playing The Creator's Game, we are a part of something timeless, something greater than ourselves. Take pride in your contributions to this game. Give it everything you can and it will give you back much more, we promise.
